Ladakh is called “The land of high passes” that holds special attraction for its tourist’s .Its dramatic mountains and beautiful landscapes makes an unforgettable experience to its visitors. It’s a Paradise on earth. This beautiful region in state of Jammu and Kashmir always surprises its visitors with its amazing towering peaks, coloring skies, snow capped Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges and lush green valleys.

Leh is the largest town  in Ladakh. Leh is also the land of pure atmosphere, which  popularly known as snow desert. Leh,the capital of kingdom of Ladakh is the dream destination of many tourists. Leh is at an altitude of 3,524 meters (11,562 ft), and is connected via National Highway 1. Leh is heaven for adventure lovers with numerous trekking trails,valleys and picturesque lakes. Leh is also known as land of Monks and Monasteries. It is one of the largest districts in the country. In this blog we will discuss about various interesting and amazing facts about Leh and Ladakh which nobody knows!

1. Ladakh has the largest telescope in Asia:

Located on the Mount Saraswati, the Indian Astronomical Observatory is one of the top 10 highest operating telescopes in the world. The advantage of this location is that it makes Ladakh a hub for stargazers and astrophotographers ! Do you know that the panoramic view of the Pangong Lake from this observatory during night will be starry? The telescope is located at 4500m above from sea level. At this height the air will be free of pollution and  dry. This allows the viewers to catch a clear view of the heavenly objects. It is located in the remote village of Hanle.

2. It is a land where gravity fails:

The Magnetic Hill, or the so-called ‘gravity hill’ is a hill that pulls you upwards. It is  Interesting to know the science behind it? Well, the hill is a downhill road. The surrounding slopes are carved out in a way that it creates an illusion of an uphill road! It is located on the smoothly constructed Srinagar-Leh highway. 

3. It is a land of the rare twin-humped Bactrian camels:



The camel with two humps is common in Ladakh. The Bactrian camel safari is a very common activity in the Nubra Valley region. These camels are native to Mongolia and were imported here during the silk trade era. Another interesting thing about these camels is that they can survive in up to the lowest temperature as nearly as -40 degrees. 

4. It is a land of thousand festivities:


Ladakh never leaves you without a vivid touch of its culture.  It has thousands fastivals. The amusing festivals of Hemis, Losar, and the Tak-Tok festivals sing songs of unending fun and joy. You can also enjoy a sight at their rituals and cultural dances.

5. Highest Bridge In The World


The Bailey Bridge is the highest altitude bridge in the world wich is located in Ladakh. The bridge runs between Dras and Suru River and it was built in 1982. The bridge is located at 5,602 mitter above mean sea level. This bridge is a temporary structure built with lattice steel and used for in military operations.

6. The Highest Settlement Region In The Country



The area located between Zanskar and Suru Valley is the country’s highest located settlement region. The Rangdum community populates this region, which is 4,400m above sea level.

7. The Highest Altitude Field Of The World


There is a highest altitude field in Ladakh wich is called Pensi-la. Pensi-la might not be the highest point in the world, but it is the highest located agricultural field in the world. The agricultural land closer to Tso Moriri Lake of Korzok region stands at 4,600m above sea level with agricultural fields.

8. Highest Saltwater Lake That Freezes


In ladakh there is a Saltwater Lake named  as Pangong Lake.The first interesting fact is that the Pangong Lake is located at 4,350m. It is the world’s highest located salt water lake. This lake is shared between India and China. Saline water sources do not usually freeze during winter but, the Pangong Lake freezes.

9. 225 Bird Species Live In This Desert


Ladakh is a high altitude desert. Although it is a desert, the land is home to around 225 bird species including some of the rare birds like Hoopoe, Robins, Finches, Redstarts, and many others. During migration time, you can find many migratory bird species also.

10. Their Own Calendar

While the rest of the world follows the Georgian calendar, the Ladakh is follow  their own  Tibetan calendar. Under this calendar, each year has 12 months with 30 days in each and  Every third year will have 13 months. The months do not have any name and are just numbered. The days are named after the five visible planets, the sun, and the moon. That extra month in every third year is added at the time of any auspicious days and any inauspicious weeks.

11. Motorable Mountain Passes



In ladakh there are world’s top three motorable mountain passes. The highest of all is Khardung La Pass at the height of 5,359m above sea level. Every adventure lover who visits Ladakh makes sure to try a mountain bike ride along this route.

12. The Highest Plateau Of Jammu And Kashmir



Ladakh is the highest plateau located in Jammu and Kashmir. The plateau is located around 3000m above mean sea level and it runs from Kunlun Ranges to the Himalayas and includes the Upper Indus Valley.
